Authorities say a 20-year-old woman was killed by a homeowner in upstate New York on Saturday night after the driver of the vehicle she was riding in pulled into the incorrect driveway.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office reported that Kaylin Gillis, a resident of Saratoga County, was in the car with three friends when they took a wrong turn into a driveway while trying to find a friend’s home in the town of Hebron.
Authorities claim that Kevin Monahan, the owner of the house the group unintentionally parked at, fired two shots at the car from his patio as the driver was getting out.
One of the bullets struck Gillis.
During a Monday press conference, Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy announced that 65-year-old Monahan had been detained and was facing second-degree murder charges.
“This is a very sad case of some young adults who were looking for a friend’s house and ended up at this man’s house who decided to come out with a firearm and discharge it,” said Murphy.
Around 10 p.m., when shots were fired, Gillis and the friends fled in order to call for assistance in a nearby town because there was no reliable cellphone reception in the area, according to Murphy.
When first responders arrived at the car, Gillis had already been declared dead.
She simply had so much life left in her because she was so young. Gillis’ cousin Haleigh Eustis, 20, told The Post on Monday night that Gillis had a very devoted boyfriend with whom she was deeply in love.

“I have no idea how he is feeling at this moment. I am aware that they were joined at the hip. She also came from a loving family. She had such a strong backbone because she was raised in such a loving, large family. And I’m furious that she can’t have it any longer.
According to Murphy, there was no interaction between the car’s passengers and the homeowner.
Murphy added that the group of friends never got out of the vehicle.

The length of time the car was in the driveway is unknown, but Murphy said it was “very short time.”
The shooting occurred in a very rural area with many dirt roads where it is “easy to get lost,” according to Murphy.
There is obviously no threat from anyone inside the car, according to Murphy. “Mr. Monahan has no cause to fear for his safety,”

Monahan, a laborer, was allegedly uncooperative when deputies arrived at the house.
For more than an hour, he resisted leaving his house, causing “a bit of a situation” before he was arrested, according to Murphy.
Before making an appearance in a Washington County court later, Monahan is being detained in the nearby Warren County.
According to the Times Union’s citation of open records, Gillis’ father works as a corrections officer at the Washington County jail.
According to a source cited by the newspaper, the police don’t think alcohol or mental illness played a role in the shooting.
Gillis’s friends and her grieving family were still in shock over the fatal shooting with a gun.
Gillis, who Chuchay Stark, 48, has known since she was a young child, was described as “really a gentle soul” by Chuchay Stark to The Post.
She was one of those children who inspires the thought, “I wish she were my kid,” She was very sensitive to other people’s needs and emotions,” said Stark. “However, there was no lack of assurance. She was clear about her goals. She was confident in her voice and unafraid to be original.
She sobbed when her daughter informed her of Gillis’ passing.
“Everyone in a small town is your child. Even though it’s not a family member, it’s terrible. She said, referring to Gillis’ parents, “I can only imagine how heartbroken Angel and Andy are.
Gillis’ cousin Eustis referred to her as the “goofball of the group.”
She loved playing these games where she had to create something from nothing, according to Eustis.
The victim’s family is said to be familiar to Murphy.
She comes from a good family—a very good family, according to what Murphy knows for sure. “And I personally know them, and she was a young girl who was abducted way too young,” I said.
A GoFundMe page has been created to aid in funding funeral expenses.
Two days prior to the shooting in New York, Ralph Yarl, 16, was shot and injured after ringing a doorbell in Kansas City, Missouri.
