It’s unclear how Coates and Sramek met, but the two were allegedly on their way to Omaha, Nebraska, about 300 miles away, to pick up the man’s nieces.
Sramek called her mother from Holdrege, Nebraska, around 12:45 p.m. on a borrowed phone. Everything appeared to be fine at the time, and Sramek stated that she planned to return home that evening.
Sunny Sramek never returned home and hasn’t been heard from since.
On April 21, 2019, her mother filed a missing person’s report with the Hitchcock County Sheriff’s office when she couldn’t contact her daughter.
Investigation
Floyd Clifford Coates told Sramek’s mother on April 20 that he and Sramek went to the Prairie Flower Casino in Carter Lake, Iowa, and stayed from 9:00 p.m. to midnight.
Sramek remained in the truck outside because the legal gambling age in Iowa was 21. Sramek was nowhere to be found when Coates returned to his vehicle around midnight.
Coates later changed his story, saying they refueled at an unspecified gas station in Omaha. He claimed he went inside to pay for the gas, but when he returned, Sramek had vanished.
Coates has a criminal record in Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska, including convictions for drug sales and possession, deadly weapon possession, battery, and theft, among other offenses.
