Layla Dawne Adkins

The Information of Case

Layla Dawne Adkins, 32 year of age, was last seen on November 13, 2008, at her home in Leeds, Alabama. Since then, she has not been seen or heard from.

Background

On October 22, 1976, Layla Dawne Adkins was born. Her marriage to Danny Adkins lasted less than a year before the couple divorced.
Layla had two daughters, aged 13 and 6, when their mother vanished. In 2008, she did not have custody of either child; one lived with their father and the other with Layla’s sister.

She moved into a house with a man in the 11200 block of Shelby County 41 in Leeds, Alabama, in September 2008. Her family is unaware of her relationship with her housemate. She worked at a Subway in Moody and maintained contact with her family by calling once a week and visiting once a month.

Layla struggled with both prescription medication and harder drugs. She’d come home and clean up for a while before going back out with a man she’d met.

Prior to her disappearance, she wrote letters to her family, discussing her plans to get a new job, cook Thanksgiving dinner, and move into an apartment with her housemate. Her family does not believe she left willingly because she was making plans for the future.

Layla pleaded guilty to theft and drug possession in 2008. She received a suspended sentence, and a warrant was issued in 2009 for failure to comply with the terms.

Investigation of Case

Layla didn’t have a car, and she hadn’t used her cell phone since November 13, 2008.

When her family contacted her housemate, he informed them that she had left the apartment. He allegedly left a few weeks after this contact. When investigators arrived at Layla’s house to check on her, they discovered it was empty, with none of her belongings left behind.

Police tracked her housemate down in Huntsville, who told them to look for Layla in Texas where she had been talking with a man on Facebook. Houston detectives tracked down the man in Texas and spoke with him extensively, but he hadn’t seen Layla in years. The housemate reportedly refused to submit to a polygraph test, but Layla’s ex-husband did.
