Details Of Disappearance

Christina was last seen on September 17, 1973, in Hueytown, Alabama. She was living alone with her mother, Janet Gail Carter, at the time of her disappearance. Janet was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. In September 1973, she began working for an insurance company in Birmingham, Alabama. She went missing at the same time as her daughter. Janet and Christina’s father had divorced two months earlier, and Christina’s father was attempting to gain custody of the child. As a result, Janet was said to have gone into hiding with Christina.

Janet’s naked, bound body was discovered inside a duffel bag alongside Clingman’s Dome Road in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on October 7. She died of suffocation the same day she was discovered. It took a month for her remains to be identified. Authorities discovered Christina was missing after the identification. A thorough search of the park yielded no clues as to Christina’s whereabouts.

Authorities believe Janet gave Christina to someone else to care for prior to her murder, and that Christina may still be alive. However, this theory has never been proven. Janet’s murder was never solved, and Christina has been missing since 1973.
